OpenSCAD Raised & Engraved Text Badge example
Practical parts
Lesson 17 of 23
Compare raised and engraved lettering on the same rounded badge.
Try changing:
label_textfinishtext_widthletter_heightbase_thicknessMedium compile complexity. Text uses the bundled Lato font; detailed glyph outlines and boolean subtraction increase cost.
How this model works
text makes 2D outlines in the runtime's bundled Lato font; linear_extrude turns them into a solid. Center alignment keeps the word around its anchor at x = 5, away from the mounting hole, and resize constrains it to a 42 x 9 mm area by default. Raised text begins 0.02 mm below the top face so it joins the plate. Engraved text is subtracted from the top, with a cutter extending 0.02 mm past the face and a floor of base_thickness - letter_height below it. The assertion prevents cutting all the way through. Change finish to compare the same letters and placement, not two different models. Other font names require font files in the runtime; the next Old English lesson shows supported optional fonts. Long names are compressed, so adjust text_width and size for readability instead of assuming automatic typography.

Make it your own
Render both Raised and Engraved finishes with the same short name, then inspect the top face and remaining floor. Try a longer name and adjust text_width without moving the centered lettering into the hole.
Change one parameter at a time and inspect the result. Use the workspace reset action to return to this lesson’s original model.
